Unit 10: How People Decide?

There’re twenty-four flavors jams on the table. The testers tasted different of them, but they have hard time to decide which one of them will be bought. The testers only can remember three or four flavors a time. They may go back to start to taste them again if they like one of them better.

Some people have hard time to make decide whatever he or she wants or not. For example, the worker wants to look for better job to have good salary hourly, but the worker like the old job because work is good place to live and make friends with these workers. So, the workers sometimes follow their logical or their guts to make their decision.

The football referees have to make decision after the player touches the touchdown area. If they have different view about touchdown, the referees gathered up and discuss to make the decision. It is easy to have more than one referee because it is hard for one referee to make decision if it is touchdown or not.

It happened to me before. I had no idea what topic to be fit my senior thesis. I scribble the list of different topic that I interested in to learn about it.  When I had meet with Senior Thesis instructor, we discuss more deeply about these topics. He gave me more picture what is the better for my thesis.  That’s why it is better to have two or three people to help the person to make decision easily.

Unit 9: People Make Mistakes

In the world, people will always make mistakes on any products, their behaviors, and anything happens. There is no "perfect". We will learn from our mistakes. For the software on the computer, any softwares guarantees have some errors that the developer design the system. If the developer want to have no mistake/error in the system, it needs to be checked three or five times through the system. But, they will never fully succeed.

When the user is stressed and needs to check something on the Internet, he or she will not follow the steps to find the information he or she is searching. The person will likely make mistakes when ordering an item. He or she needs to relax for a moment and check the Internet then the process will be fine. For example, I was stressed with lots of homework and projects that were due a few days later. I feel the need to hurry and finish these projects. When it dues, I will sit down in the classroom and think something funny. I realized I forget one thing at home. That's why when stressed I will forgot things easily.

People of different generations have different error strategies. Some elders follow their old traditions and have not have tried the new modern technology. They  feel behind with the new technology and they will make some errors. They will feel frustrated if they do not know new technology. For example, the woman in her sixties, had an old cellphone, she was not fully aware about new mobile phone. She will struggle with a new phone. She will make some mistakes before she feels comfortable using the new phone.

Unit 8: How People Feel

Facial expressions are important to tell what people are feeling. It represents how people are feeling after their result from a specific events, actions, or food. It may exhibited joy, sadness, contempt, fear, disgust, surprise, and anger. In public, people can read your facial expression after your result on whatever you see. For example, when I lectured in front of the classroom, I noticed more than two students and the instructor making facial expression that they were obviously tiring to understand what I was saying about my project.

A facial expression is important to present what you are feeling. But, it is very sad for people who have had Botox cosmetic product. The Botox is used to reduce the facial wrinkles and thus treated people cannot express their emotions because the muscle cannot move after the Botox injected. When taking Botox, people thought it was their solution to their wrinkles, but they need to think about their facial expression. They might cannot show their laugh or anger at someone or something. Also, the Botox inject might destroy your face muscles for good.

Some people have no patience in waiting for something to arrive or come. For example, at the baggage claim in the airport, I may not patient while waiting for my suitcase to arrive because I am in a big hurry to get back to my college. I did not want to be waiting for a long time in the airport.  Well, it depends with people’s feeling.

It is fact that the students, employees, and I feel so stressful from our projects and homework that need be done. We need to relax to distress. After work and class hours, they used their iPhone or mobile to hear songs to relax their mind and body. For myself, I watch music videos for relaxation. Of course, our mind needs a rest because the mind is too busy to be functioning all day.

Amygdala vs Thalamus - Amygdala is associated with the sense of smell. Thalamus is part of relaying sensory.

“Welcoming Warmth” - a mix of fig, jasmine and freesia.

Nucleus Accubens – the part of the brain that is active when people experience pleasurable events.

Attention Restoration – assists the people to concentrate better after spending time in nature or looking at the senses of natures.

Portfolio Day

I attended to Portfolio Day at Benaroya Hall. I collected the amazed business cards, resumes, and two gifts. They presented really amazed projects. I walked around third or forth times. I looked at their stuffs again.

Big mobile presented how order the videos games works.

Organized and mounted the business cards on board, three resumes, and two gifts.

Senior Thesis Presentation

I have a Thursday evening class at the same time with Senior Thesis Presentation. I only stayed in my class until I got feedback from my teacher and dean. After that, I headed to Senior Thesis Presentation. I stayed until the end. It was interested listening students' thesis. I am almost understanding the point about senior thesis and project. I wished I could make the picture more specific.

Stepfanie Lukito's thesis named "Using Technology to Maximum Children."
She explained how children learned and followed into adulthood in their parents' footsteps. She presented some examples how children learn words from kids' TV shows for example Dora the Adventure. She sometimes talked nervously and tried to explain in more specific details.

Juri Seo's thesis named "Emotion in Interactive Design." She explained her two different theories about interactive design to these people. She presented some images from advertising ad on how people feel. But, for me, she didn't really present clearly her two different theories.

Jamie DuBois' thesis named "Help Shark!" He liked to reduce the advertising ad and presented it as an interactive media to save lots of papers. He presented some examples of posters and interactive media. He was very good explaining the difference between the poster and interactive media. He had well thought about ideas for his thesis.

Helen He's thesis named "The 'New' Made in China". She was half nervous but she explained very well about the China's branding, identity system, and culture/traditional ways. Her theory about how other countries steals some of China’s traditional/cultures and redesigns them to look different from China's. I would like to know what her project looks like.

Unit 7: People are Social Animals

One of the chapters seemed bit scary stating the high percent age of lies through email, paper and pen, instant message, telephone, and face-to-face meetings. Some people never assume other people may lie in email or paper and pen. They might think they are being honest. It is more than 92 percent of group tell the lie through the email.

It's true because sometimes people can be fooled after reading the email or paper. The writing can't tell the reader if it is absolutely a lie or not.

Another chapter talked about speakers' brain and listeners' brain sync up during communication. When the speaker speaks in front of an audience, he notices some of listeners talking with other listeners. It might does not mean they are ignoring the speaker. They are synced in their brain at the same time with talking with other listeners.

Jonah Lehrer (2010) explained the difference between Facebook and Twitter. Facebook is considered as your best friends because you check in it often everyday. Twitter is here to help you to connect with different people that you may never met before.

Laughing is the best social bonding with other people. It is easy to bond with others in different locations. For example, I joined with my close friend and her new crowd in the cafeteria. I happened to signed something funny, they were absolutely laughing so hard. They thought I was very hilarious and they liked my sense of humor. They wanted to see more of my sense of humor.

Dunbar’s number: Robin Dunbar studied different species of animals. He figured out if there was a relationship between brain size and the number of stable relationships in social groups. He used the formula for calculating the limit for different groups.

 Mirror Neurons:

Synchronous activity: It is action you take together with others where everyone is doing the same thing at the same time such as dancing, tai chi, yoga, singing, and chanting in time as a group.

Duchenne smile: Identified two different types of smiles.

My Thesis Proposal

My Thesis Proposal

For my senior thesis I was thinking about something I want to do for my senior project. My senior project would be simple workout app that users can do themselves at their house. They may have their time to look at workout app that has simply instructions without too much of words. Even thought, I read the fitness magazines in the grocery store or bookstores. I always avoid the reading the information to explain how to do with fitness or how it works. I tend to look at these images of fitness. It may waste the users’ time to read the information and cause they don’t do their fitness after reading the magazines because it possible makes their eyes tired. It is best way for them depend on the fitness movement images. It will save their lots time from reading the information. Also, whoever aren’t the members for any fitness area, they don’t want to pay the monthly fees and use their gas to drive there for fitness. They can do their own exercise at their house to have relaxed fitness.

I like to see most of people keep their motivation to do their fitness at home instead of lazy if they don’t have any errands to do. Most of people have lack of motivation because they think the exercise is too much of time and get bushed easily. Best way is have your fitness partner or friends to come together to have support each other.

Unit 6: What Motivated People?

I read the beginning the chapter of Unit 7. It explained how to keep people motivated with coffee gift card to collect the stamp on each box to get complete for free coffee. The coffee shop wants to keep customers to keep motivated to earn the stamps. For example, I played the online game called Candy Crush Saga on the laptop, iPad, and in my iPhone. I keep myself motivated to get completed all of levels. I sometimes couldn't predict myself to complete the levels. It sometimes took me long to complete the levels in few days. I am still keep my motivated to play it. People keep their motivated and will become successful at last.

I do have dopamine loops on the Internet such as Twitter or Facebook, check the emails and texts, and check some information. I cannot ignore my social media because I am dangerously addicted to it. I sometimes like social media because it keeps me busy to check repeated. I keep pay my attention to my phone most of time because my iphone is important to me because of best social media due of internet, text, and social media apps such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook as always.

Unit 5 How People Focus Their Attention

Sometimes people like to pay attention on a few items of information at a time because they don't have time to read all the information.
The few details in the information may not be enough for people to understand. More or less information that is needed may depend on the subject matter.
People really cannot do multitasking because they only can control/focus on one task at a time, two or more tasks is difficult to do a good job. For example, an interpreter can only listen and interpret to me at the same time. But, an interpreter cannot voice what I sign at the same time the instructor is talking.

Unit 4: How People Think

The first page (homepage) has basic information rather than a full description that would overwhelm some people. The next page has a bit more information. A website should minimize the number of times people need to click to get detailed information. On the other hand, one of the websites has fewer loads meaning that people don't have to think or remember more than ten pages.
If you just read a sentence more than three times, your mind begins to wander.   People's minds that wander are not the same as daydreaming such as stray thoughts, fantasies, or stories you imagine. This sometimes happens to me when I am reading a book that I enjoy. I just start daydreaming. I didn't realize that I was still reading the book. I try again to focus on the book. Daydreaming while you are driving is dangerous because you are unaware of what is happening in your surroundings.

"When you're stuck, go to sleep"
When you are struggling with your project or homework for a long time, take a nap or go to bed. Your mind will be refreshed and then finish your project or homework. People thought that they needed to stay up late, but your mind will be worse because of all the day activities the mind has done. The mind needs a rest for a few hours while you sleep.

Goal-gradient effect - people are more motivated to complete a task the closer they get to the end goal.

Operant conditioning – If you want a certain behavior or reaction, then reward it when it occurs. The reward can be continuous or random.

Dopamine- created in various parts of the brain and is critical in all sorts of brain function: including moving, thinking, sleeping and motivation.

Thesis Response 4

"Alcohol Branding and Sins"

Does an alcohol is part of seven deadly sins? Yes, I agree with her. Because they are part of lust, gluttony, wrath, envy, pride, sloth, and greed, any alcohols such bottle, martini, and cocktail present sexy, pride, and ego. When you see any flyers, billboards or magazine ads, there have a feeling about the models pose with alcohol that look so sexy as lust. Also, the handsome guy stands in middle of line all bikini or swimsuits women that called pride and ego.

In other hand, they alcohol’s brandings have different purposes and shape of bottle. For example, the alcohol named 1792 Ridgemont Reserve, using the illustrated map of the where product coming from long ago. Also, skull bottle had no text on it, but the audience looked at it and had known what it is because the bottle is full of vodka.

Thesis Response 3

"Make It Move Embracing Motion Graphics Design"

His thesis is half bored and interested because he explained about the old time design and future time about motion graphics as The Girl With Dragon Tattoo’s opening presents different motion from old motion from the past. Also, he explained good reasons how the graphic design has been changing through the time. The old designers focus on the design as typography and layout. Now, in the 21st century, it seems the graphic designers learn more specific about designer as motion graphics and animations.

He had good point about the design is change a bit in few years later. The designers may like to learn specific about graphic designer. His thesis applies to my design experience because the graphic design is not only learn how to do layout for brochure, annual report, and booklet, typography, and flyers. But, not only learn to do for website, it includes with ad commercial and information commercial. Because of new technologies coming, I need to learn more about graphic design and web design. The social media is increase highly and graphic designers have to learn more about web design.

Unit 3: How People Remember?

When you are on the phone and the person you are talking, the callers and talkers give you the number and their name. You do not have any paper and pen to scribble on it. You have to repeat their number and name to keep in your mind. Your brain is “short-term” memory because the brain be able to hold too much information same times. If you were in stressful with stuff, it would reduce the effectiveness of working memory.

Your brain has two parts: task includes remembering the words or numbers is in the left hemisphere. The tasks includes spatial relations such as finding on a map is in the right hemisphere.

There are ten billion neurons in the brain that store much information. The neurons in the brain fire many words, phrases, songs, phone numbers every time they repeat. The people tried to memorize them in their brain. They have to hear or see the information over and over to make stick on the brain.

You sometimes wished some something vivid happened stick on your brain. It can be annoying that you think about it some day because the memories are so vivid.

Rough Project Proposal for Two and Three

I've been thinking to design something different for two more projects. I like to make the packaging for shopping or products that need to redesign the packaging. I don't yet make decision which client to be fitting with my project 2.

Also, I have made decision to make graphic image sticker on the window for Baskin Robbins' shop. Since I saw the shop in different location that not really enough lure the people's attention to get the ice cream from the shop.

Unit 2: How People Read

One chapter explains about the shapes of words and letters in each sentence. People's eyes read more quickly and smoothly, but in shape jumps called saccade. Also, there's an example that uppercase letters may be harder to read than lowercase letters. But, authors can use these uppercase letters to show people shouting. Another chapter talks about the different look of the typefaces such as san serifs and serifs. There is a debate about how to read it smoothly, but there's no rule how to use them because of people’s reading style. There're many typefaces with different shapes. Some typefaces are too decorative making make it hard to read and understand. Another chapter explains about reading a single wide column and multiple columns. Many people prefer to read multiple columns when reading newspapers, magazines, and websites. These are easy to read smoothly and fast compared to the single wide column which takes time to read and possibly losing your place going to the next line.

Definition:
Saccade: The reader's eye move in quick, sharp jumps with short period of stillness in between.

Fixations: The moment of stillness

Thesis Response 2

“Cultural Fusion in Brand Strategy”

He explained the contact different from other countries with true cultural traditional and cultural traditional stealing. His thesis’s explanation really so clearly and make good points about two different cultural. He has lots of good point about copy the cultural.

I am actually learn something that I do not realized that some countries influenced and/or inspired by other countries. Some countries could be stole/borrowed the cultural from other countries to use for mobile, art, and fashion runway. When I read it, it made me wonder if the 21st century still stealing the traditional cultural and changing some of traditional to present bit different ways. That's why I noticed some branding for clothing, silverwares, hardwares or furnishing's shape are almost same. They just changed a little to be their own style.

Thesis Response 1

“Interacting With the Illusion Depth”
It’s very interested how he explained the five different senses; sight, touch, smell, feel, and taste, are used to interact with movie, video games technology, and mobile device. Five senses communicate to understand what is in the environment. For example, a painter crates a painting; the artwork depends on the artist’s tools. It showed how they used to create the art. Although, the paper with texts or images show how to communicate with people to be understand.

Imagine how the five senses are not exist in the world, they will not communicate or not immediately recognize. Five senses are very dependable in the world.

I had known how the five senses interact with device. But for more specific about five senses interact with technology. I depend with my sight and touch on the technology such as computer, movies, and television since I losing my hearing implant. I use my sight to see everything what I saw.

Unit 1: How People See

You think your brain understands what you see. It is not true because your brain is interpreting what you see. When people look at three-dimensional objects, it enters the retina as two-dimensional. But, then the two-dimensional image is sent to visual cortex in the brain to be recognized as a three-dimensional image. The fusiform face area is in the brain, not part of the visual cortex (FFA). We depend on to recognize faces faster than objects. People who have autism cannot use the FFA for face recognition. They see faces the same as objects. More men than women that have color-blindness since men only have one X-chromosome, women have two X-chromosome. A color blindness person may not recognize the difference in color or the color disappears.  Many people may recognize different colors that have certain meaning in different cultures. For example, the red means financial trouble, danger or stop. Green means money, environment, and “go”. Since different cultures have color purpose, you have to consider the color selection you use.

Geon (geometric icon) is to use basic shapes to identity objects.

FFA (fusiform face area) allows faces to bypass the brain’s usual interpretive channels (visual cortex) and help the people identify faces more quickly than objects.

Canonical perspective is usually drawn from a perspective slightly above looking down and nothing askew straight from left to right.

Affordance is a visual clue to the function of an object.
